Deribit, a Coinbase subsidiary, has received a Broker-Dealer Licence from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), enabling the derivatives platform to route spot trading orders to Coinbase Exchange for execution. The approval marks the first major integration of the two platforms since Coinbase’s acquisition of Deribit and takes effect immediately, providing clients access to significantly deeper liquidity and expanded asset offerings on institutional-grade infrastructure.

  • Client Types Supported: Retail, Qualified, and Institutional investors
  • Liquidity Provider: Coinbase Exchange orderbook
  • Asset Expansion: Hundreds of new tokens from Coinbase Exchange
  • Fallback System: Deribit’s own spot orderbook remains active for select assets
  • Regulatory Timeline: Deribit established global headquarters in Dubai under VARA supervision since January 2025

The licence enables Deribit to enhance its spot trading product, launched in January 2025, by connecting clients to one of crypto’s largest centralised orderbooks. Orders placed on Deribit’s platform will now execute on Coinbase Exchange, delivering tighter spreads, improved execution quality, and access to hundreds of additional trading pairs unavailable on Deribit’s standalone orderbook. The arrangement preserves the familiar Deribit interface and derivatives ecosystem while leveraging Coinbase‘s institutional-grade infrastructure and liquidity depth.

The integration creates operational synergies across Coinbase’s product suite. Assets acquired through the upgraded spot offering can be used as collateral for derivatives trading on Deribit following regulatory approval, allowing clients to execute more diversified trading strategies without switching platforms. A small number of assets will continue to execute on Deribit’s independent spot orderbook, which remains operational as a fallback mechanism to ensure continuous service coverage.

The approval reflects Coinbase‘s strategy of securing regulatory licenses in established digital asset hubs. Deribit was the first derivatives exchange to obtain VARA regulatory approval and has operated its global headquarters from Dubai since the start of 2025. Coinbase acquired Deribit to combine the world’s leading crypto options platform with institutional-grade spot trading and custody infrastructure.
