Coinbase and Moov announced a partnership to integrate stablecoin payment capabilities into community banks and credit unions, marking a shift toward mainstream adoption of digital assets in traditional financial institutions. The collaboration embeds stablecoin acceptance, settlement, and real-time funding directly into existing banking infrastructure, serving Moov’s customer base of more than 1,000 community banks and credit unions across the United States.

  • Supported Use Cases: Consumer stablecoin payments, merchant acceptance, merchant settlement, and payouts
  • Infrastructure Provider: Coinbase provides regulated digital asset infrastructure and custody via Coinbase Prime’s Custodial Wallet accounts
  • Integration Method: Moov integrates Coinbase’s Payments API and stablecoin rails into existing payments platforms
  • Key Benefit: Eliminates the need for institutions to build separate cryptocurrency technology stacks

The partnership addresses a fundamental challenge for regional financial institutions: customers increasingly request stablecoin capabilities, but building independent crypto infrastructure remains costly and complex. By combining Coinbase’s regulated digital asset infrastructure with Moov’s existing payments platform, community banks can offer stablecoin services without abandoning their core operations. The arrangement allows institutions to maintain customer relationships while accessing modern payment rails that operate outside traditional settlement windows.

Business customers of community institutions are already being asked to accept stablecoins, and today they go outside their institution to do it. We built this so the answer comes from their primary FI instead.

The initiative reflects industry momentum toward embedding digital assets into traditional banking systems rather than creating parallel financial infrastructure. Citizens Bank of Edmond, a 125-year-old community institution, highlighted the competitive pressure small businesses face to access stablecoin services. The partnership model enables regional banks to serve merchants seeking lower interchange costs and faster settlement without outsourcing customer relationships to cryptocurrency-native companies.

Coinbase Prime provides digital asset custody and infrastructure services to institutional clients. Moov operates payments infrastructure connecting community financial institutions to card acquiring and issuing networks and real-time payment rails.
